Be Healthy and Get Off Her Case- Part 3
by Dr. Coach Love
Continuing from Parts 1 & 2 …… Differences between partners in how each manages weight, overall health, and exercise are very common. In an emotionally healthy marriage, partners honor equal rights to act on their own beliefs. This applies even when you believe your position or idea about healthy living is better.
Relationships are not about being right. They are about effective communication concerning opinions on all matters — especially health. Ignoring or not discussing competing opinions about weight, diet, and exercise generally causes a relationship to become weaker and more distant. Negotiating through differences is essential for an emotionally healthy relationship.
When one partner addresses weight or exercise concerns with the other, there are five main impacts to consider—on the relationship and for the individual:
1. Impact on external attractiveness—sexual and social
2. Impact on internal attractiveness—respect and admiration
3. Impact on dynamics—control, distance, and resistance
4. Impact on functioning—the ability/willingness to
participate in specific activities
5. Impact on health—physical and mental
Couples tend to become stuck or focus on one or more of these five potential consequences of being overweight and not exercising. What do you do?
Check back for a list of tips on how to deal with your partner on diet, exercise, and unhealthy weight issues.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
